WSET Level 4 Diploma D2 Wine Business

Students undertake a detailed study of the factors that contribute to the price of wine, the types of business engaged in the production of wine, available options for getting wine to the point of sale, and key considerations in wine marketing. After completion of the course, students will be able to demonstrate:

  • understand how supply and demand, costs of production and sale, and factors associated with legislation & currency influence the price of wine
  • evaluate the types of businesses engaged in wine production and the options available to those businesses for importing, distributing, retail, hospitality, DTC in a variety of market types
  • analyse market forces, identify target consumers, and devise marketing strategies for each segment of the market

Course Format Options 

In-Person: 1 full day of intensive classroom instruction (8 hours), which is a combination of lecture, group discussion, and individual activities. Outside of these classroom days students will self-study using the provided course materials and supplemental teaching material provided by NVWA.

Online: The WSET’s online classroom contains weekly reading assignments, forum discussions, and individual & group activities. The instructor for the course will be the WSET’s own Certified Educator and students will be in a cohort of other Diploma candidates from the NVWA as well as other wine schools across the globe. Student’s may log-in at any time of day & complete their coursework at their own pace for the duration of the course.

Combo: Candidates will be enrolled in both the WSET’s online classroom and the in-person class in Napa.

Course Duration

Students will begin their course of study once they register for the unit and receive their course materials. Students should expect to study for a minimum of 50 hours over a period of about 3 months.

Course Materials

Upon registration students will receive access to the WSET’s digital study guide, which will be the main source of study material for this unit. Students will also have access to the WSET’s Online Resource and Feedback Testing Classroom where students can access supplemental learning material & mock exams. NVWA also provides supplemental learning materials such as videos, mock questions, and guided reading questions.


The D2 Wine Business is assessed by means of a 60-minute written exam consisting of multiple-part open-response style questions. THE EXAM MUST BE TAKEN IN NAPA, CA ON THE EXAM DATE ASSOCIATED WITH YOUR ENROLLED COURSE. Exams are graded at the WSET headquarters in London and results are issued via email approximately 3 months after the exam.
