This introductory wine certification course teaches students through sight, smell, and taste, to understand more about wine. By the end of the course, you’ll be able to taste wine using a systematic approach and be able to identify the main styles of wine. You’ll also learn the key principles of food and wine pairing and be able to apply these to your own food and wine choices. This is a four week course with fixed start and end dates.

Napa Valley Wine Academy students will also receive study pointers on the Level 1 WSET exam.  As you work through the course, you will be asked to share your learning experience with the rest of the course group and instructor. Tasting is an essential part of studying for this course and you will need to taste a range of wines and the list of recommendations be found inside your course.

To obtain the WSET Level 1 Award Certificate in Wine, you will need to successfully pass an exam with 30 multiple-choice questions. The proctored EXAM must be taken in person at one of our school locations.




The level of knowledge needed to take this course: None necessary. This class is especially recommended for:

  • Those in the retail, hospitality or wholesale areas of the wine industry wishing to obtain greater knowledge and professional certification from a trusted internationally-recognized organization
  • Wine enthusiasts wanting an introduction to the main styles of wine available
  • Front-line staff and/or anyone wanting basic product knowledge and skills in the storage and service of wines
  • Anyone wanting to learn how to taste and access wines professionally

To obtain the WSET Level 1 Award Certificate in Wine, you will need to successfully pass an exam with 30 multiple-choice questions. – EXAM must be taken in person at one of our school locations. Upon successful completion of this WSET Level 1 Certification Course you will have gained:

  • An understanding of the main types and styles of wines available.
  • An understanding of how to store and serve wines.
  • An understanding of the basic principles of food and wine pairing.
  • WSET tutored tasting of wines.
  • Level 1 Award in Wine Certification from the WSET – which is a formal qualification in wine.

The WSET Level 1 (Introductory) Certificate online course follows a 4-week study program with instructor support as follows:

  • Module 1 – What is Wine & How is it Made?
  • Module 2 – Types and Styles of Wine
  • Module 3 – Introduction to Tasting
  • Module 4 – Grape Varieties & Wines
  • Module 5 – Storage & Service of Wines
  • Module 6 – Pairing Food & Wines
  • Module 7 – Revision

You will have access to the course for 4 weeks.  Each week consists of a series of online activities, often based on group discussion, with an online tutor allocated to guide the students’ studies. Includes instructor support. A timed feedback test is provided at the end of each week for students to practice for the exam and assess their understanding of that week’s topics. Group tasting activities are also provided to familiarize students with the Systematic Approach to Tasting at beginner level. System Requirements: As this course is taught online, students will require access to a computer with the following minimum requirements:  Firefox 25.0, Safari 6, Chrome 30.0 or other HTML5  compatible with Javascript and cookies enabled. Adobe Reader XI or equivalent. Adobe Flash Player 11. Internet access (broadband recommended). When the course is over the student arranges with Napa Valley Wine Academy to take the WSET Level 1 Exam.
