ABOUT RHÔNE VALLEY VINEYARDS

France et Vallee
The Rhône region of France has been planted to vines for over 2,000 years, first by the Greeks and then by the Romans. Winemaking thrived with support from the church, especially after Pope Clement V re-located the papacy to Avignon in 1309. The reputation and consumption of wines labeled C.D.R. grew over centuries; in 1937 Côtes du Rhône was one of France’s first AOCs. The backbone of the Rhône Valley in France is the Côtes du Rhône AOC, a topographically diverse area stretching from Vienne in the north past Avignon in the south, surrounding and following the Rhône River. Within this large region there is varied geography, four different soil types, and both Continental and Mediterranean climates. The winemaking style of blending reflects the diversity of grape varieties grown, with white, rose and red wines produced.

Carte CDRV FR focus villages scaled 1

The majority of Rhône Valley wines are produced in the southern part of the Côtes du Rhône around the cities of Avignon and Orange.
Within the larger AOC lies the Côtes du Rhône Villages appellation, which signifies a higher quality level of wines.

Beyond that is a little-known but unique set of appellations called Côtes du Rhône Villages with Geographical Names.

These 22 village areas have stricter production standards, lower yields and are true expressions of terroir.

ONLINE COURSES

Four Courses; One Program:

creating confidence in appreciating, talking about, buying, or selling Rhône Valley wines.

About the Rhône Valley Vineyards Program

We’ve partnered with the Rhône Valley Vineyards’ professional association to develop a comprehensive course of the region – from the world renown Crus to the larger appellations offering wines of great taste and value – and including lesser known but up-and-coming AOCs that every Rhône enthusiast and professional needs to know. From instructional videos to interactive maps, you’ll explore France’s famous Rhône Valley appellations in a level of detail not offered in WSET Level 2 or Level 3. A foundation in wine is highly recommended (Wine 101 or WSET Level 1 at least).

We recommend you take the courses in this order

  1. Introduction to the Rhône Valley Vineyards
  2. Côtes du Rhône Wines
  3. Crus of the Côtes du Rhône
  4. Other AOCs of the Rhône Valley

Introduction to the Rhône Valley is the first of four courses that make up the Rhône Valley Vineyards online program. The goal of this course is to provide you with foundational knowledge about the Rhône Valley vineyards that we will then build upon in the other 3 courses of this program.

The course content is delivered through engaging videos and interactive presentations designed to enhance your learning experience. We’ll begin the course by exploring the Rhône Valley’s picturesque vineyards, from the sun-drenched slopes of the Southern Rhône to the rugged, dramatic terrain of the Northern Rhône; delving into the unique features that make the Rhône Valley one of the world’s most esteemed wine-producing regions.

In the second half of the course, we’ll explore the grape varieties, viticulture, and winemaking techniques, before moving on to an overview of the hierarchy of wine regions found in the Rhône Valley. You’ll practice what you’ve learned by completing a quiz at the end of each module, and then you’ll demonstrate achievement of the course objectives by successfully completing the final course assessment.

Whether you’re a seasoned wine enthusiast or a curious novice, this course promises to ignite your passion for and appreciation of the Rhône Valley.

Côtes du Rhône and Côtes du Rhône Villages AOCs is the second of four courses that make up the Rhône Valley Vineyards program. If you haven’t already, we highly recommend that you complete the first course in this program prior to beginning this course (each course is listed and linked below).

The introduction provided in the first course will serve as a foundation for the new knowledge you’ll gain in this course as we’ll dig deeper into the Rhône Valley’s largest production area, the Côtes du Rhône.

The course content is delivered through engaging videos and interactive presentations designed to enhance your learning experience. We’ll begin with an overview of the Côtes du Rhône AOC and Côtes du Rhône Villages AOC, reviewing the associated wine laws, terroirs, and wines. Then, we’ll explore each of the 22 Côtes du Rhône Villages with Geographic Names, honing in on the unique characteristics that make these areas deserving of affixing their geographic names to the Côtes du Rhône Villages AOC. You’ll practice what you’ve learned by completing a quiz at the end of each module, and then you’ll demonstrate achievement of the course objectives by successfully completing the final course assessment.

Crus of the Côtes du Rhône is the third of four courses that make up the Rhône Valley Vineyards online program. The goal of this course is to build upon the foundational information provided in courses 1 and 2 of the program with a detailed exploration of the 17 Crus found in the Rhône Valley. As such, we highly recommend taking the first two courses prior to beginning this course.

The course content is delivered through engaging videos and interactive presentations designed to enhance your learning experience. We’ll begin by reviewing the terroirs of Northern and Southern Rhône before building on this foundation by covering the defining characteristics of the 17 Crus. From the aromatic finesse of Côte-Rôtie in the north, to the depth and structure of Gigondas in the south, we’ll delve into the rich history that shaped the crus, and traverse the diverse terroirs and grape varieties that make each cru so exceptional. You’ll practice what you’ve learned by completing a quiz at the end of each module, and then you’ll demonstrate achievement of the course objectives by successfully completing the final course assessment.

Prepare to awaken your palate, deepen your knowledge, and be transported to a place where the spirit of the land and the craftsmanship of its vignerons unite to produce wines that are nothing short of sublime.

Other AOCs of the Rhône Valley is the fourth and final course of the Rhône Valley Vineyards online program. The goal of this course is to build upon the foundational information from course 1 and the AOC details from courses 2 and 3, with a detailed exploration of the 11 other AOCs found in the Rhône Valley. As such, we highly recommend taking the first three courses prior to beginning this course.

The course content is delivered through engaging videos and interactive presentations designed to enhance your learning experience. So far in this program, we’ve explored the largest production area of the Rhône Valley: the Côtes du Rhône AOC, Côtes du Rhône Villages (CDRV) AOC, the 22 CDRVs with Geographic Names, and the 17 Crus. In this course, we’ll end our exploration of the Rhône Valley vineyards with an overview of the 11 other AOCs in the region.

In the first module, we’ll focus our attention on the left bank of the Rhône River, honing in on the defining characteristics of the Diois AOCs (Clairette de Die, Crémant de Die, Coteaux de Die, and Châtillon en Diois), Grignan-les-Adhémar, Ventoux, and Luberon. Then will move to the right bank of the Rhône River by exploring Côtes du Vivarais, Duché d’Uzès, Clairette de Bellegarde, and Costières de Nîmes.

At the end of each module, you’ll practice what you’ve learned by completing a quiz. Once you’ve completed the course content and quizzes, you’ll demonstrate achievement of the course objectives by successfully completing the final course assessment.
