Etna and Beyond—A Masterclass on Sicilian Wine

“To have seen Italy without having seen Sicily is to not have seen Italy at all, for Sicily is the clue to everything.” This quote by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe in the late 1780s still seems to express the sentiments of many a visitor to Sicily today.
The essence of the island is a series of contrasts—wild and sophisticated, provincial and worldly, isolated yet at the center—and her wines are no exception. The revival of Etna’s wines has fueled a feverish interest in the entire island’s offerings. From Nero d’Avola, Frappato, Grillo, Catarratto, and Carricante to the Nerellos (Mascalese and Cappuccio alike), Sicily is a wine country unto itself.
Join Sheri Sauter Morano MW and Geralyn Brostrom from Italian Wine Central for an immersion into the wine styles, culture, history—and yes, foods—of Sicily. The wine tasting focus will be on Sicily’s indigenous grape varieties, showcasing some of the best examples that are coming out of Sicily today. The range of flavors from one end of the island to the other are significant, so we’ll taste wines from Etna in the east to the venerable Marsala in the west to the profound passito wines from the island of Pantelleria, where wine production defies the conditions.
This masterclass will feature 16 wines from across the island.
