Sustainable Cork Closures
with Patrick Spencer, Director of the Natural Cork Council
In this class on sustainable wine closures, we undertake a holistic examination of the diverse options available to winemakers and their implications from consumer standpoints. Our focus extends to comparing and contrasting screw caps, plastic closures, and natural cork, illuminating the multifaceted considerations surrounding sustainability. From the winemaker’s perspective, we analyze the practical aspects of each closure type. We delve into the environmental ramifications, exploring factors such as material sourcing, manufacturing processes, and end-of-life disposal. Moreover, we investigate consumer attitudes and preferences, discerning how perceptions of authenticity, tradition, and environmental responsibility influence purchasing decisions. By critically evaluating these closure options through a lens of sustainability, our class aims to equip future industry leaders with the knowledge needed to make informed choices that uphold ecological integrity.
