The Society of Wine Educators was founded in 1974 as a non-profit educational organization (501c3) whose mission is to advance wine education through professional development and certification.

The Society’s goal is to foster and promote the professional education and development of the individual in particular, and the professional education and development of the wine industry as a whole.

OUR 4-DAY CSW INTENSIVE PROGRAM

  • The Napa Valley Wine Academy has designed an in-depth 4-day intensive test prep course for the Society of Wine Educators’ Certified Specialist of Wine Certification Exam. Proper test preparation is very important, worldwide less than 58% of first-time CSW home-study examinees pass the exam. Our intensive test prep program is intended to give CSW Candidates the advantage of personalized instruction and a comprehensive understanding of the exam material. Our students gain a solid understanding of the world of wine that will help them progress in their drinks career, as well as become part of a network of wine professionals.
  • CSW candidates learn about wine in the HEART of wine country. Our courses are conducted at a working winery, which provides visual, on-site instruction. Students go into the vineyard to discuss subjects like trellising systems and sustainable vineyard practices or venture into the cellar for their review of winemaking procedures. It is not enough to just hear a presentation and smell and taste wines; we want our students to learn with all of their senses. We want you to see and touch the very things you are learning about.

  • The Society of Wine Educators’ Certified Specialist of Wine certification is internationally recognized and will provide the successful candidate with a valuable career-enhancing credential.
  • The Society of Wine Educators in conjunction with prominent members of the wine industry developed The Certified Specialist of Wine certification (CSW). The CSW has become one of the most important trade credentials in the wine industry today. Companies such as Banfi, E & J Gallo, Kobrand, Trinchero Winery, and many national distributors are major supporters.
  • The CSW certification program includes the study of wine tasting, terminology, composition, chemistry, flaws, viticulture, enology, labels, laws and wine regions of the world.
  • The CSW is awarded to those candidates scoring 75 percent or higher on the 100 multiple-choice question examination within a 60-minute time frame. CSW recipients receive a certificate recognizing their achievement, a CSW lapel pin, and the ability to use the post nominal “CSW” as part of their professional title.

THE CSW CURRICULUM?

  • The CSW program covers wine tasting, terminology, composition, chemistry, flaws, viticulture, enology, labels, laws and wine regions of the world.
  • Our instructors systematically work through the units reviewing material, answering questions and supplementing the study guides with additional resources and instruction.
  • At the end of the 4-day intensive, the CSW Exam is given. You will be tested on your knowledge of the wines, regions and laws.
