Wine Quiz - Wine Basics

WHAT'S YOUR WINE IQ?

Wine Basics and Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions:

  1. How is wine made?

    • The basic process involves harvesting grapes, fermenting them, aging the wine, and then bottling it. The specific techniques can vary greatly between different types of wine.
  2. How should wine be stored?

    • Store wine in a cool, dark place at a stable temperature, ideally around 55°F (13°C). Bottles should be stored on their sides to keep the cork moist.
  3. What is the difference between Old World and New World wines?

    • Old World wines refer to those from traditional wine-producing countries in Europe, characterized by stricter regulations and often subtler flavors. New World wines are from newer wine regions like the USA, Australia, and South America, often bolder in flavor.
  4. How do you pair wine with food?

    • A general guideline is to match the intensity of the wine with the food. Red wines often pair well with red meat, while white wines complement fish and poultry. However, personal preference plays a big role.
  5. What does ‘vintage’ mean in wine?

    • Vintage refers to the year the grapes were harvested. The climate and weather conditions of that year can significantly impact the quality and flavor of the wine.
  6. How long does wine last after opening?

    • Red wines can last 3–5 days after opening if resealed and stored in a cool place. White and rosé wines usually last about 3 days. Sparkling wines have a shorter lifespan of 1-2 days.
  7. What are tannins in wine?

    • Tannins are compounds present in grape skins, seeds, and stems. In wine, they contribute to the structure and mouthfeel, often experienced as a dry sensation.
  8. Can wine go bad?

    • Yes, wine can spoil due to factors like oxidation, cork taint, or exposure to extreme temperatures. Spoiled wine may have an off smell or taste.
  9. Is wine good for health?

    • Moderate wine consumption, particularly red wine, has been linked to health benefits like heart health due to antioxidants. However, it’s important to drink responsibly.
  10. What is the proper way to taste wine?

    • When tasting wine, look at its color, swirl it to release aromas, smell it, and then taste it to appreciate the full range of flavors.

This is just a snapshot of the world of wine. The best way to learn more is through tasting different wines and exploring various wine regions and styles.
