The WSET Level 4 Diploma in Wines is the highest qualification offered by the Wine & Spirit Education Trust, and the required prerequisite for the Institute of Masters of Wine study programme. Your D1 enrolment includes the one-time WSET New Diploma Candidate Registration. Additional costs to plan for: the $350 annual candidate renewal fee if you extend beyond your initial three-year registration period, optional wine kits for D4 and D5, examination resit fees, and travel to Napa for in-person examinations.
How long does the WSET Diploma take?
WSET specifies a Total Qualification Time of 500 hours for the Level 4 Diploma: 128 guided learning hours, of which 11 hours and 50 minutes are examinations, plus a minimum of 372 hours of private study. Most candidates complete the Diploma in 18 months to three years. Your registration is valid for three years from enrolment, after which you may re-register.
The six units of the WSET Level 4 Diploma
Five units are assessed by examination and one by a research paper. D1 must be sat before you progress to any other unit. D3 alone carries half the total study weighting of the Diploma.
D1 — Wine Production
D1 examines how decisions in the vineyard and the winery shape a wine's style, quality and price. It is the entry point to the Diploma and must be taken first. Assessed by a 90-minute open-response paper. See D1 dates and pricing.
D2 — Wine Business
D2 covers the commercial side of wine: pricing, the businesses involved in production and distribution, routes to market, and marketing. Requires D1. Assessed by a 60-minute open-response paper. See D2 dates and pricing.
D3 — Wines of the World
D3 is the largest unit in the Diploma at 50% of the total study weighting. It covers the still wines of France, Germany, Austria, Hungary, Greece, Italy, Spain, Portugal, the USA, Canada, Chile, Argentina, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand and China. Assessed over two consecutive days: a two-part theory examination of 3 hours 20 minutes, then a blind tasting of 12 wines across two papers totalling 3 hours. Requires D1 and D2. D4 — Sparkling Wines
D4 covers the sparkling wines of France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the UK, the USA, South America, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. Assessed by a 90-minute paper combining open-response questions with a blind tasting of three wines. Requires D1 and D2. See D4 dates and pricing.
D5 — Fortified Wines

D6 — Independent Research Assignment
D6 is a 3,000-word research paper on a topic set by WSET. Two topic briefs are released each year on 1 August, with deadlines the following 31 January and 31 July. What are the entry requirements for the WSET Diploma?
You must hold either the WSET Level 3 Award in Wines or the WSET Level 3 Award in Wines and Spirits, and be of legal drinking age. Candidates sitting in English where it is not their first language are strongly recommended by WSET to have IELTS at 6.5 or above, or demonstrate an equivalent ability level.
How is the Diploma graded?
A minimum of a pass — 55% — is required in every one of the six units. Overall grades are awarded on a weighted aggregate across all units: a Pass at 55% to 64%, a Pass with Merit at 65% to 74%, and a Pass with Distinction at 75% or above. Diploma graduates use the post-nominal DipWSET.
How online study works at Napa Valley Wine Academy
All Diploma classes are delivered online through live Zoom sessions, recorded so you can revisit them or catch up across time zones. You have twice-weekly open office hours with our Diploma Program Director, Noelle Hale, and access to our faculty, which includes several Masters of Wine. Meet the faculty.
Examinations must be taken in person in Napa, California. This applies to every examined unit. Plan travel around the fixed WSET examination dates, which fall in October and March for D1, October, January, March and June for D2, October and May for D3, and October, January and June for D4 and D5.
Frequently asked questions
Can I study the WSET Diploma entirely online?
The taught portion, yes. All Napa Valley Wine Academy Diploma classes are delivered online via live Zoom sessions with recordings available. The examinations, including the D3 blind tasting, must be taken in person at our Napa campus.
Do I have to take the units in order?
You must sit the D1 examination before progressing to other units. D2 follows, and D3, D4 and D5 may then be scheduled around your availability. D6 may be started once you are enrolled.
How long do I have to complete the Diploma?
Registration is valid for three years from enrolment. Unit passes remain valid for that registration period. At the end of it you may re-register, and the continuing validity of any passes you have gained will be reviewed against the current WSET specification.
Is the WSET Diploma a prerequisite for the Master of Wine?
Yes. Holding the WSET Level 4 Diploma satisfies one of the entry requirements for the Institute of Masters of Wine study programme.
What happens if I fail a unit?
You may resit the unit you did not pass. Resit examinations for D1 are held on two set dates per academic year, in October and March. Speak with our Diploma Program Director about scheduling.
