WSET Level 1 course facts

  • Price: $425, including the in-person class, the online prep course, 12 months of platform access and your exam registration
  • Duration: a one-day in-person class plus a 4–6 hour online prep course, 10–12 study hours in total
  • Tastings: 8 wines tasted during the in-person session
  • Exam format: 30 multiple-choice questions in 45 minutes. From 1 August 2026 the WSET Level 1 exam is offered in an online format only, with remote invigilation.
  • Pass mark: 70%. Pass or fail; no Merit or Distinction at this level.
  • Prerequisite: none. There are no restrictions on entry to the WSET Level 1 Award in Wines and no previous knowledge of wine is required.
  • Next step: the WSET Level 2 Award in Wines in person.

Exam Information:

The WSET Level 1 Award in Wines exam will be offered only in an online format for any courses after August 1st, 2026. Please be aware that completing the required course is a mandatory prerequisite before you are eligible to sit for the exam. You must register for your exam within a year of your in-person course date within the Exams Management Page of your online prep course.
