Most of the industry hires for five kinds of work.
Sales is the biggest door by a distance. Hospitality is the easiest first step. The rest reward a credential.
Which WSET level gets you into which interview.
No certification guarantees a job. But job listings tell you what hiring managers screen for, and it is not the same at every level. Here is what the postings actually ask for.
Get conversant
Enough to talk about wine with a guest without bluffing. The right start if you have never studied wine.
- Tasting room host
- Wine shop or restaurant floor
- Hospitality and events
Hiring managers rarely require it, but it shows you are serious, and it is the fastest way to find out if you want more.
Get shortlisted
The level that starts appearing in job ads. Grapes, regions, styles and the WSET tasting approach, at the depth a sales conversation needs.
- Distributor or importer sales rep
- Tasting room lead, wine shop associate
- Brand ambassador, wine club
If you are choosing between Level 1 and Level 2 for a sales role, Level 2 is the one that changes the conversation.
Get taken seriously
The trade's working standard. Viticulture, winemaking and the full Systematic Approach to Tasting, examined in writing and by blind tasting.
- Wine buyer, beverage director
- Fine wine and key account sales
- Tasting room and hospitality manager
- Wine educator
This is where many people also start the Professional Wine Educator path, or begin coaching toward Diploma.
Lead the room
The expert qualification. Production, business and the wines of the world, plus an independent research assignment.
- Senior buyer, portfolio manager
- Brand and marketing leadership
- Writer, critic, senior educator
- The usual route toward Master of Wine
Taught here by four Masters of Wine. Not a first step; a decision to make wine your profession.

Three things people ask us.
Do I need a certification to get a wine job?
Not for every job. Tasting rooms and restaurant floors hire on attitude and hospitality. Sales, buying and education roles increasingly list WSET Level 2 or 3 as required or preferred, because it tells an employer you can talk about wine accurately on day one.
Where do the listings come from?
Our board mirrors the wine jobs classifieds on WineBusiness.com, the industry's long-running job board, so you see the same roles the trade sees, in one place, free.
Will NVWA help me find a job?
We are a school, not a recruiter, so we will not place you. What we do: the credential employers ask for, coaching when you need it, a resume guide, and this board. Students also hear about roles through instructors and the Premier Crew community.
A remote team, sea to shining sea, obsessed with students.
We are one of the most awarded wine schools in the country and one of the largest WSET providers in North America. Every person here wakes up with the same job: make wine education excellent and take the intimidation out of it. We work on video and Slack, host team tastings and trivia, and put the student at the center of every decision.
