How D6 topics and deadlines work

WSET releases two D6 topic briefs each year on 1 August. One topic always carries a deadline of the following 31 January, the other a deadline of the following 31 July. You choose which of the two topics to write about, and the paper must be submitted before its assigned deadline. If neither topic suits you, you may wait for the next academic year, when two new topics are released.

Recent topics have included wine fraud, orange wine, Virginia wine, regenerative viticulture, and no/low alcohol wines. Current topics are confirmed to enrolled candidates — contact our team for this year’s briefs.

How to submit

Submission requires mailing a hard copy of your paper to NVWA, which must be received before the deadline, as well as emailing a PDF version to WSET. Both formats are required for your paper to be graded.

Where D6 sits in the Diploma

D6 may be started once you are enrolled and have sat D1 and D2. The examined units are D3 Wines of the World, D4 Sparkling Wines and D5 Fortified Wines. See full Diploma pricing, study hours and entry requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the WSET Level 4 Diploma D6 Independent Research Assignment?

The D6 Independent Research Assignment is a significant component of the WSET Level 4 Diploma in Wines. It involves an independent research project where candidates select a topic from those provided and develop a detailed paper.

Who can enroll in the D6 Research Assignment?

Enrollment is open to students who have attempted the WSET Level 4 Diploma's D1 and D2 exams. Receipt of results for these exams is not required to begin the D6 project.

What are the submission deadlines for the research paper?

Annually, one paper topic is always due January 31, and the other is always due July 31. To submit your paper, NVWA must receive a printed copy of your paper BEFORE the submission deadline (this means you need to mail it with enough time to arrive before the deadline). You must also email the WSET a PDF copy of your paper directly. Both submissions are required or the WSET reserves the right to not grade your paper.

How long should I spend on my research paper?

You should expect to dedicate a minimum of 50 hours to your research over a period of about 2-3 months. This allows sufficient time for in-depth study and review of your chosen topic.

Are there any specific format requirements for the research paper?

While specific formatting guidelines will be provided upon registration, generally, the paper should be scholarly, well-organized, and clearly written, demonstrating a deep understanding of the topic and an ability to synthesize and analyze information critically.

How is the research paper evaluated?

The paper is evaluated based on your ability to demonstrate thorough knowledge of the subject, utilize relevant sources effectively, analyze and evaluate information, and present well-substantiated conclusions. The assessment focuses on depth, analytical rigor, and scholarly presentation.

What happens after I submit my paper?

After submission, your paper is sent to the WSET's headquarters in London for grading. Results are typically issued via email about three months after the submission deadline.

Can I choose a topic not listed for this year?

No, you must choose from the topics provided for the current academic year. If neither topic aligns with your interests, you may opt to wait until the next academic year when new topics will be released.

What resources are available to help me with my research?

Upon enrollment, you'll gain access to the Napa Valley Wine Academy's online learning platform, which includes suggested research resources, essay structure tips, and a submission checklist. However, no textbooks are specifically provided for this unit, and extensive independent research is expected.
