WSET Level 4 Diploma D5 Fortified Wines

In the D5 unit of the WSET Level 4 Diploma, students explore the fortified wines of the world — including Sherry, Port, Madeira, Vins Doux Naturels and Rutherglen Muscat — through theoretical and practical study.

D5 at a glance

Price: $997, including all study materials, live Zoom classes and your exam fee
Weighting: 5% of the WSET Level 4 Diploma
Assessment: a single 90-minute paper combining open-response questions with a blind tasting of three fortified wines, taken in person in Napa, California
Pass mark: a minimum of 45% in each component and 55% aggregate. Merit is 65–74%, Distinction 75% or above
Prerequisite: enrolment in the WSET Level 4 Diploma and completion of the D1 and D2 exams. Receipt of results is not required.
Exam dates: three per academic year, in October, January and June

Where D5 sits in the Diploma

Wines for the course

A list of recommended wines to taste is provided with this course. An optional D5 wine kit is available from our partner, Small Lot Bottles, including 18 curated 100mL wine samples tasted during class sessions throughout the course. Kits are delivered shortly before your first tasting webinar.

An optional 18-sample tasting kit (100mL vials) is available for purchase from our partner, Small Lot Bottles. The kit will contain the wines tasted during D5 classes and is useful for calibration with the class instructor. Wine kits will be delivered right before the first tasting webinar.
