WSET Level 4 Diploma D6 Research Paper

While Diploma’s Unit 6 is an independent project, our proprietary online classroom offers additional resources to ensure your paper meets WSET expectations.

D6 Overview: D6 requires the submission of a 3,000-word research paper, on a topic assigned by the WSET. The WSET releases two D6 topic briefs every year on August 1. One topic always has a deadline of the following January 31, and the other topic always has a deadline of the following July 31. Students may choose which topic they would like to write about, and the paper must be submitted before its assigned deadline. Submission requires mailing a hard copy of your paper to NVWA, which must be received BEFORE the deadline, as well as emailing a PDF version to the WSET. Both submission formats are required to ensure your paper is graded.

The 2026 topics are wine fraud (due January 31, 2026) and orange wine (due July 31, 2026).

Other recent topics have included Virginia wine, regenerative viticulture, no/lo alcohol wines, and more. If you don’t like either of the two available topics, you can wait until the next academic year for two new topics to be released.

Prerequisites: You must have taken the D1 and D2 exams (receipt of results not required).

This is an independent study unit without any scheduled classes, allowing you to integrate your research activities flexibly with other professional or academic responsibilities. The project can be undertaken from anywhere, with all submissions handled remotely.

What happens after I submit my paper?

After submission, your paper is sent to the WSET's headquarters in London for grading. Results are typically issued via email about three months after the submission deadline.

Can I choose a topic not listed for this year?

No, you must choose from the topics provided for the current academic year. If neither topic aligns with your interests, you may opt to wait until the next academic year when new topics will be released.
