The wines produced in the shadow of Europe’s largest active volcano express one of the most interesting and inviting boutique terroirs in the world. Located in sunny Sicily, Mt. Etna provides a variety of meso climates, ranging in elevation from about 1300 to 3280 feet above sea level (some of Italy’s highest vineyards.)
In ancient times, wine from the region was thought to have mystical powers to heal and relax. In 1968, Etna DOC became the first appellation created in Sicily. Even so, its international reputation has only come in the past few decades.
One of the world’s top authorities on Mt. Etna wines is Ben Spencer, dipWSET, who lives and works on the volcano. In addition to his work as a journalist, wine judge, and professional winemaker, he founded The Etna Wine School in 2011. He has since written “The New Wines of Mount Etna”, a book that explores the practices, history, and joys of making wine on Europe’s largest active volcano. In 2021, the book won the Best European Wine Book from Gourmand International.
Join us for a guided tasting* and discussion on the new wines of Mount Etna!
*In lieu of wine kits we will provide a list of suggested wines. Ben will be tasting through 5 styles of wine during the webinar. Here are his options for wines to source for each style:
