In Unit 1, students undertake a detailed theoretical study of the business of alcoholic beverages in terms of global & local market dynamics and marketing. This is a foundational unit as business concepts learned in this unit apply to the study of future units. After completion of the course, students will be able to demonstrate in-depth knowledge and understanding of:

  • Global market dynamics and their influence in commercial decision making
  • Important companies and their influence in sectors of the alcoholic beverage business
  • Factors influencing the local market for alcoholic beverages
  • Procedures used in the purchase, importation, and sale of alcoholic beverages in the local market
  • Influences on marketing decisions in global and local markets

Description

Course Format: The in-person course is 2 full days of intensive classroom instruction, which is a combination of lecture, group discussion, and individual activities. Outside of these classroom days students will self-study using the course materials provided and attend additional learning webinars provided by NVWA.

Course Duration: Students will begin their course of study once they register for the unit and receive their course materials. Students should expect to study for a minimum of 60 hours over 2.5 months.

Course Materials: The main materials for Unit 1 include electronic PDF guides to the Global Alcoholic Beverage Markets and the Marketing of Alcoholic Beverages. Additionally, students receive access to the WSET’s Online Global Campus and Feedback Testing Classroom to access supplemental learning material & mock exams. NVWA also hosts several live and recorded webinars for additional learning opportunities.

Exam: Unit 1 Business of Alcoholic Beverages is assessed by means of a closed-book theory paper in the form of a case-study examination, to be completed in 75 minutes.
