How much do you know about Costières de Nîmes?

Costières de Nîmes, formerly known as Costières du Gard, is an appellation for the red, white, and rosé wines produced in an area in the south of France, around the city of Nîmes in the Rhône wine region. This area was rebranded as Costières de Nîmes in 1989, emphasizing its proximity to the ancient city of Nîmes, known for its rich Roman history.

Characteristics of Costières de Nîmes Wines:

  1. Red Wines:

    • Dominantly made from Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre grapes.
    • Typically, these wines are full-bodied and rich in flavor.
    • They often have spicy notes, with a balance of red and black fruit flavors.
  2. Rosé Wines:

    • Made primarily from Grenache, Syrah, and Cinsault.
    • These rosés are known for their freshness and fruity aromas.
    • They tend to be dry, with a pleasant acidity and flavors of summer fruits.
  3. White Wines:

    • Primarily produced from Grenache Blanc, Roussanne, and Marsanne.
    • These wines are generally crisp and aromatic.
    • Common flavors include citrus, green apple, and floral notes, often with a minerally finish.

Terroir:

  • The terroir is unique, with a mix of Rhône and Languedoc influences.
  • The soils are primarily composed of pebbles and stones, similar to the famed “galets roulés” of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, providing excellent drainage and heat retention.
  • The climate is Mediterranean, with hot summers and mild winters, influenced by the proximity to the sea and the Rhône River.

Wine Production:

  • The region has been undergoing a quality revolution, with many producers focusing on lower yields and sustainable viticulture.
  • Both traditional and modern winemaking techniques are employed.
  • The appellation is gaining recognition for its value-for-money wines that often overdeliver in terms of quality.

In summary, the wines of Costières de Nîmes are known for their distinctive character, influenced by the unique terroir and the blend of traditional and modern winemaking. The reds are rich and spicy, the rosés are fresh and fruity, and the whites are crisp and aromatic, making them a versatile choice for various occasions and pairings.
