Your Diploma journey begins with Unit 2* 

In Unit 2, students undertake a detailed theoretical study of grape growing, winemaking, and finishing techniques for the production of wine of varying styles, quality levels, and prices. This unit is the first unit that new Diploma candidates take, as it builds a foundational level of theory knowledge needed for the study of future units. After completion of the course, students will be able to demonstrate in-depth knowledge and understanding of:

  • Factors that influence the production of wine
  • Processes used in viticulture, vinification, maturation, treatment, and packaging of wine
  • Options available at each stage of the wine production process from vineyard to preparation for sale
  • How each process and option can affect the style, quality, and commercial value of wine

* the WSET requires all students to begin their Diploma studies with unit 2 before moving on to other units



Course Format: The in-person course is 2 full days of intensive classroom instruction, which is a combination of lecture, group discussion, and individual activities. Outside of these classroom days students will self-study using the course materials provided and attend additional learning webinars provided by NVWA.

Course Duration: Students will begin their course of study once they register for the unit and receive their course materials. Students should expect to study for a minimum of 60 hours over 3 months.

Course Materials: Upon registration students will be mailed a 180-page Unit 2 Study Guide, which will be the main source of study material for this unit. Students will also receive access to the WSET’s Online Global Campus and Feedback Testing Classroom where students can access supplemental learning material & mock exams. NVWA also hosts several live and recorded webinars for additional learning opportunities.

Exam: Unit 2 Wine Production is assessed by means of a 100-question multiple-choice exam, to be completed in 90 minutes. The exam must be taken in Napa on the specified exam date.
