Introduction Sommelier Tasting Workshop:

Are you a wine student or passionate enthusiast looking to learn about the physiology of taste and how to evaluate acidity, tannin, alcohol, residual sugar and other structural elements of a wine? Master Sommelier Tim Gaiser has designed this course so you can start to build your wine descriptor vocabulary. In this interactive full-day session you will gain the confidence to more accurately identify and describe wines. An ideal course for the student embarking on their journey in preparing for an entry to intermediate level wine exam.

A 1-Day Professional Wine Tasting Workshop for Sommelier Students covering the following topics:

  • The deductive tasting method and correct terminology
  • Palate calibration:
  • Oak vs. no oak; earth vs. no earth; acidity-low vs. high, alcohol (same) & tannin (same); pyrazines vs. terpenes
  • The major white varieties and their major markers and paradigms
  • The major red varieties and their major markers and paradigms
  • Major wine faults and how to ID them
  • Tasting of 18 wines using a deductive tasting grid.

Our hands-on SommDay School™ workshops are designed for students in the food, beverage, and hospitality industry who are just starting their sommelier education journey, and ideal for those looking to improve further their service and tasting skills. These day-long intensive workshops were developed by Master Sommelier Tim Gaiser and the Napa Valley Wine Academy. The goal of each 6-hour session is aimed at helping waitstaff, bartenders, F&B managers, wine buyers, winery tasting room staff, and anyone else working in the food and wine industry to hone their tasting and service skills, as well as better prepare those interested in pursuing wine certification exams such as the Society of Wine Educators and the Wine & Spirit Education Trust examinations. SommDay School™ Workshops are also ideal for the student who wants to continue to study, taste and practice their service techniques in preparation for sommelier certification classes and exams. For anyone outside the industry–the avid wine enthusiast–you will also benefit from these workshops as they offer a taste of the life of a sommelier. Workshops include:
