BLIND TASTING STRATEGY MASTER CLASS SERIES
with Mary Margaret McCamic, MW
Geared toward students who are studying for their WSET Diploma* and Master of Wine Students
In this blind-tasting focused series, students will taste wines and learn the strategy behind correctly identifying wines based on common WSET Diploma and Master of Wine questions, including those that touch on specific grape variety, a wine’s region of origin, its quality level, and the winemaking techniques used to produce the wine. Each session will include guided, semi-blind tastings followed by a blind tasting, discussion, and review. Sessions will be led by Mary Margaret McCamic MW.
The course is offered as either a single class or a four-part series. Sessions will rotate in their topics. Each session focuses on a specific strategy behind answering blind tasting questions.
- Session 1 – Strategies for identifying a wine’s predominant grape variety
- Session 2 – Strategies for identifying a wine’s specific region of origin
- Session 3 – Strategies for correlating what you see, smell and taste in the glass to how the wine was made
- Session 4 – Strategies for objectively determining the quality of a wine
THEORY STRATEGY MASTER CLASS SERIES
with Matt Deller, MW
Geared toward students who are studying for their WSET Diploma* and Master of Wine Students
In this theory focused series, students will learn how to set themselves up for success in the written part of the examinations. Master of Wine and wine industry executive, Matt Deller MW will guide you through four strategy sessions that will teach you how to prepare for, and acquit yourself in theory-based exams. This is an area that has historically been one of the biggest challenges for students.
- Session 1 – Knowledge and Preparation: Collecting and organizing information, planning and executing the academic year
- Session 2 – Essay and Exam Techniques: strategies and tactics for planning and writing pass-level essays and excelling in wine exams
- Session 3 – Answering Production Questions: practical experience in tackling viticulture, winemaking, and post-fermentation questions
- Session 4 – Answering Industry Questions: practical experience in tackling business and contemporary issues questions

Master of Wine, DWS, WSET Certified Educator, Instructor
Mary Margaret is one of only 40 Masters of Wine in the United States, of whom only 14 are women. She was the recipient of two highly coveted awards for her performance on the Master of Wine exams, earning both the Bollinger Medal for outstanding tasting ability and the Overall Achievement Award for being the top student in her 2016 graduating class.
Prior to becoming a Master of Wine, Mary Margaret earned the WSET Diploma and was awarded the Wine Australia Scholarship as the top overall performing Diploma graduate in the United States in 2011. She is also a WSET Certified Educator, and she has developed and taught wine courses for consumers since 2010.
Mary Margaret started working in the wine industry nearly nine years ago, shortly after earning a master’s degree in teaching from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Now, Mary Margaret has worked on almost every side of the wine industry, including work in retail, restaurants, and wholesale in New York City, North Carolina, and California. Before moving to Napa to work as a winery sales manager, she was the Director of Retail Sales at North Berkeley wine, a French-focused importer, retailer, and wholesaler with a special focus on Burgundy. When not selling, teaching or talking about wine, you can find Mary Margaret drinking it. Her glass is usually filled with Burgundy or Champagne.
MATT DELLER, MW
Master of Wine, Instructor
Matt Deller is one of less than 50 Masters of Wine in North America.
He is Director of Fine Wine Development for Constellation Brands, prior to which he was North American Sales Director for their New Zealand portfolio.
Matt entered the wine industry in 1996 as Territory Manager – Fine Wine for Pernod Ricard. He then helped establish Bennett & Deller Wine, specialist importers of Spanish, Italian and South American wines, where he was Sales and Marketing Director for over a decade. Following that, he joined The Fine Wine Delivery Company as Wine Program Director, leading a dynamic buying and trade sales team and developing integrated sales and marketing programs.
