Study and Certification Program

Napa Valley Wine Academy is proud to offer the Wine Scholar Guild certification programs. These in-depth programs provides current and accurate information on the wines and wine regions of France, Italy, and Spain. Developed and administrated by the Wine Scholar Guild (formerly known as French Wine Society), these specialized programs are designed for serious students of wine, whether professionals or serious wine hobbyists.

Students of wine who follow these in-depth curriculums and pass the exam will earn either the French Wine Scholar (FWS), Italian Wine Scholar (IWS), or Spanish Wine Scholar (SWS) post-nominal.

FRENCH WINE SCHOLAR CERTIFICATION

The French Wine Scholar™ Study and Certification program provides current, accurate and in-depth information on the wines and wine regions of France.

Developed and administrated by the Wine Scholar Guild with the support of the French Ministry of Agriculture, this specialization program is designed for advanced students of wine, whether professionals or serious wine hobbyists.

Students who follow this in-depth curriculum and pass the exam will earn the French Wine Scholar™ (FWS) post-nominal (e.g. John Smith, FWS).

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

  • Intermediate

WHAT YOU’LL LEARN

In-depth knowledge on:

  • Location and climate and their effects on viticulture and wine style
  • Topography, geography and soils and their impact on the vine
  • Grape varieties and their organoleptic profiles
  • Viticulture and winemaking practices
  • All AOCs with their regulations, wine styles, and specificities
  •  Alsace, Champagne, Bourgogne, Beaujolais, Jura, Savoie, Loire, Bordeaux, Southwest, Languedoc, Roussillon, Rhône, Provence, Corsica
  • Plus: A Foundation Unit covering: French wine law, grape varieties, viticulture, viniculture and a discussion of Old World vs. New World wine styles

NOTES:

  • The 270-page, full-color study manual (6th Edition) provides all the information from which the test questions are derived. You do not need to research your own study materials; everything you need to know is in the manual.
  • All course materials and textbooks, including any test fees, are included.

SPANISH WINE SCHOLAR CERTIFICATION

The Spanish Wine Scholar™ education program is a Spanish wine course designed to provide committed students of wine with the most advanced and comprehensive specialization study program on Spanish wine bar none!

It was created by Spanish wine specialist Rick Fisher, Spanish Wine Scholar™ Education Director and Alumni of Napa Valley Wine Academy. Recognizing the exceptional depth and accuracy of the program, Wines from Spain (ICEX – Spain’s Trade & Investment Government Agency) has endorsed the program. Individuals who follow this in-depth curriculum and pass the exam earn the Spanish Wine Scholar title and the SWS post-nominal which may be incorporated into a professional signature (e.g. John Smith, SWS).

IN-PERSON COURSE & WORKSHOP REFUNDS & TRANSFERS

Cancellations of confirmed in-person course enrollments and workshops are accepted up to 60 days before the start of the course. An administration fee of $50 plus the full cost of the study materials and exam fees will be deducted, and the remainder of the course fee refunded to the payee. Separate WSET exam cancellation/transfer rules apply.
Transfers of a confirmed enrollment to another course are accepted 60 days before the course start date with an administration fee of $50.

Cancellations less than 60 days before the in-person course start date or course no shows forfeit any refund/transfer options unless students can provide medical documentation. If medical documentation is provided, students can be transferred to a later course. No refunds will be applied.

Course Transfers cannot be carried forward to the next academic year (which commenced on January 1).

Students are highly encouraged to purchase separate travel insurance.
